May 2025 – First scribbles, and colonial occupation

So May arrived and in theory I should start being able to see some signs of sea mat life emerging in the water. My chosen subject areas off the West coast of Scotland is Mid Argyll area and the Ross of Mull. The water is still cold here and it seems that emergent sea mat life is still shivering and hiding somewhere too. So I decide to get use to drawing on the hydrophobic paper and familiarise myself with the territory and practice getting my eye in with a few recky snorkels..

Wow. Well my first scribbles are a joy and a shock at the same time.

First of all draw on this paper underwater is like drawing on butter; its delicously smooth. But it is hard to know what to attempt to draw first, there is so much to see. My second very relevant observation is that everything I am drawing is moving with the motion of the waves and tide, and so am I! Im going to have to develop my speed drawing for sure..

When I get back to my studio have a shot at practicing some speed drawing images of kelp off the internet..
